TENNIS:  Meet the Coaches
The AFC juniors program is led by David Welsh, a full‐time Career & Technical Education (CTE) teacher at the Arlington Career Center since 1997. Assisting Coach Welsh will be high-school players and other members of the AFC adult tennis teams. David has been an AFC member since 1999, and is also the captain of the AFC men’s A team.
David is a Don Tomb protégé (the AFC teaching pro for the past 29 years, until his retirement in 2010), and assisted with the AFC juniors classes last year, as well as helping Don with his coaching duties for the Wakefield High School tennis team in 2009 and 2010. David also played high school tennis in in Rye Brook, NY where he made the All District team.
For the past 10 years, David has also participated every summer in the tennis programs of the Sea Colony Tennis Resort, East Bethany, DE under nationally recognized coach Dave Marshall. In 2005, David won a World Team Tennis National 3.5 Championship (on a team with Stephen Tordella, captain of the AFC B team); in 2008 he won the Virginia Commonwealth 8.0 Mixed Championship.
David was recognized as a "Connect with Kids Champion" in 2004 by the Arlington Partnership for Children Youth and Families; for "Creating Excellence" in 2005 by the Virginia Department of Education; and as a "Teacher of the Year" nominee in 2006 by the Arlington Public Schools.
